In-Between

In-Between

In-Between is a group exhibition featuring Providence-based artists: Kim Arthurs (@moonersmakes) Canvas Elevation / Hannah Hallett (@canvas.elevati0n) and Lydia Therrien (@garden_and_grave). In-Between offers a hand to welcome you into a liminal space where visual storytelling explores perception, embraces memory, bends time, and evokes transformation and action through reflection. The artists part the veil to present the In-Between as a space to explore, interact with, and reflect on. This is expressed through a blend of mediums: mixed media, cyanotype, mirrors, foil printmaking, collage, analog double exposure photography, and immersive non-linear memoir. There is reality and fantasy, creation and destruction, life and death, past, present, and future, and there is also somewhere in-between this duality and form, that the artists extend an inviting hand from, and welcome you to perceive, immerse yourself in the dreamscape, and surrender to the whirlpool of the In-Between.

In conversation with the mixed media collection of artwork & interactive installation on view at the gallery, a short film created by Kim Arthurs will also screen at the film reception on July 27 at 4pm.

About the film:
In-Between offers a non-linear memoir, set in a liminal space with an elemental altar, where time bends, and a hand reaches out from somewhere in-between past, present, future. Created with a vintage analog projector, a memoir written by Kim Arthurs, recorded and set to original music composed by Max Shakun, and nature soundscapes composed by Emily Baroody, this exploration of memory tells a story of returning to self, accessed through a portal that bridges past to future, and body to home. Themes of time, abundance, grief, physics, and spirituality, find movement through divination and emotional alchemy, and it whirlpools together with improvised performances by Jared Manzola, Rachel Wallace, and Kim Arthurs. In-Between was shot in one weekend in a trance-like dream state in a garage for twenty-hours straight, followed by another twelve, with no prior rehearsals.

An interactive, immersive liminal space designed by Kim Arthurs welcomes visitors at the entrance to the gallery to pass through, or linger. Inspired by the short film, Kim reimagines the ethereal veil of the in-between in the gallery with a new design and purpose. Suspended in-between a portal of two elemental mirrors with extended arms, a new film dances on the wall behind an altar that invites you to linger, reflect, and consider what action to take next. Looping nature soundscapes composed by local musician, Emily Baroody, compliment looping ethereal naturescapes digitally projected onto the display. The in-between is designed to encourage movement, self reflection, and action.

The longer a visitor lingers here, in-between, their shadow incorporates into the naturescapes projected onto the wall, and an opportunity to discover more presents itself to the visitor, that might have been missed on the initial pass through the veil. Between two mirrors, an altar proposes action to empty your pockets and consider what you are carrying, holding on to, and bringing to the table. A mirror offers a hand, inviting you to reflect on this. The altar offers tarot cards for drawing a past, present, future spread, and offers handmade paper, to write down what you are carrying, put it back in your pocket, and carry it around some more on a journey through the gallery, and back home.

You are Here, In-Between

Here, in-between

Scattered throughout the gallery are four elemental offerings to carry home as well, and as the visitor passes back through the in-between to leave the gallery, an Earth/Pentacles offering awaits underneath an elemental mirror with two hands reaching through, holding three tarot cards curved and pierced with string running through the middle, reflecting a wormhole. The wormhole mirror is situated across from the other mirror, creating the illusion of a portal. This mirror poses a second question: what do you want to do with the world?

The elemental offerings placed around the gallery serve as tools to consider when reflecting on what you want to do with the world, what you want to do for yourself, and what do you want to do with what you are carrying in your pocket.

The in-between altar reminds you with its orb of dirt, goblet of water, candle, and feather: if it can grow into something good, plant it. If it hurts, cleanse it with water. If it no longer serves you and needs to be released, burn it in the flame. If it should be shared to benefit others, scatter it with the wind so it can spread.

The elemental offerings in your pocket as you leave the in-between linger with what you wrote down on that paper: fire/wands (tea candle to bring to the table and eat dinner with community around it) water/cups (handmade paper to send a love letter to someone who deserves affirmation) air/swords (feathers to welcome in or sweep away energy) and earth/pentacles (perennial wildflower seeds to make a future bouquet)

Empty your pockets: What are you carrying? What do you want to do with it? What do you want to do with the world?
